Apple’s latest iOS 26 update, released September 15th, introduces several new features, including a “Visited Places” function in the Maps app. This tool automatically tracks locations you visit, allowing for easy recall of past destinations. While Apple asserts that this data is private and can be deleted, users concerned about location history can disable the feature entirely.

Enabling and Disabling Visited Places

Upon updating to iOS 26, the Maps app will prompt users to enable Visited Places.

  • To disable tracking:
  • Open Settings.
  • Navigate to Apps.
  • Select Maps.
  • Tap Location.
  • Toggle off the Visited Places option.

Some users have reported initial difficulties disabling the toggle. A workaround involves first disabling and re-enabling the “Precise Location” toggle within the same menu. This can resolve the issue, allowing you to then disable Visited Places.

Additional Privacy Settings

Apple also includes a “Preferred Routes & Predicted Destinations” setting. This feature analyzes driving patterns to anticipate destinations and offer real-time traffic updates, including detour suggestions. Disabling this prevents the app from learning and storing your travel habits.

Clearing Existing Location Data

If you’ve already enabled Visited Places and wish to remove past entries:

  1. Open Maps.
  2. Select Places.
  3. Choose Visited Places.
  4. Swipe left on individual locations to delete them, or tap “Clear History ” at the bottom to remove all stored data.

These settings allow users to retain control over their location privacy while still enjoying the benefits of Apple Maps. The update underscores the growing importance of understanding and managing data collection on mobile devices.
