Meta Expands Smart Glasses with Prescription Lenses, AI-Powered Features, and Global Availability

Meta is pushing deeper into the smart glasses market with several key updates to its Ray-Ban Meta and Oakley Meta lines. The company is now offering prescription lens support, advanced AI-driven features (including calorie estimation and message summarization), and expanding availability to new international markets. These changes aim to make smart glasses a more practical, everyday device.

New Frames and Lens Options

Two new frame styles, the rectangular Blayzer Optics and the rounder Sriber Optics, are now available for preorder starting at $499, with shipping beginning April 14th. Colors include matte black, transparent matte ice gray, and transparent stone beige, alongside a new dark brown charging case.

Alongside the new frames, Meta is also expanding lens options for both Ray-Ban Meta Gen 2 and Oakley Meta glasses. These include Prizm Dark Golf lenses (for better contrast on the golf course) and Prizm Transitions lenses (which adapt to outdoor light conditions).

AI Integration: Calorie Tracking and Smart Summaries

The most significant update is the expansion of Meta AI’s capabilities within the glasses. Users can now log meals by simply looking at food or taking a photo, with the AI estimating nutritional information. However, Meta cautions that AI-powered tools can sometimes generate inaccurate data, so users should verify the results.

The glasses can also summarize incoming messages (including WhatsApp) and allow voice-activated replies. For example, saying “Hey Meta, catch me up on my messages” will generate a concise summary of recent group chats. All voice interactions are processed on-device with end-to-end encryption.

Expanded Features for Ray-Ban Display

The Ray-Ban Display model gains new features like Instagram Reels support, a personalized Spotify shortcut, and new games (2048 and GOAT) playable with the Meta Neural Band. Glanceable widgets for Reminders, Weather, Stocks, and Calendar have also been added, along with a new Calendar app that integrates with Google Calendar and Outlook.

Neural Handwriting, rolling out soon, allows users to write on surfaces to reply to messages silently across WhatsApp, Messenger, iMessage, and Android messaging. Coming this spring is dual video recording, which combines both display and point-of-view footage into a single shareable video.

Global Expansion and Live Translation

Meta is expanding sales to Japan, Korea, Singapore, Chile, Colombia, and Peru. The glasses will also feature live translation for 20 languages, including Mandarin, Korean, Japanese, and Arabic, making them useful for international travel.

This expansion demonstrates Meta’s commitment to making its smart glasses a globally viable product.

The combination of prescription support, AI-powered features, and broader market access represents a major step toward mainstream adoption of smart glasses. Whether these devices will become an integral part of daily life remains to be seen, but Meta is clearly positioning them as more than just a novelty.
