It costs a fortune now.
If you’ve been holding off on buying that permanent pass for your media server, stop.
Plex dropped a bombshell Tuesday. The price for its Lifetime Pass —a single payment that supposedly secures top-tier access forever—is jumping from $249.91 to $749.79 starting July 1.
Three times the price.
Why so much so soon?
Remember just twelve months ago when Plex doubled its rate from roughly $120 to $250? That was the second massive hike in under two years. If you crunch the numbers, that is a 525 percent increase since mid-2023. Android Authority noted this trend and frankly it stings.
Mashable Light Speed wants your email for their weekly tech newsletter but honestly, you can skip that. The news itself is enough.
Here is the deal though. The July 1 deadline is still weeks away.
You have a window to decide if Plex is worth half a grand or if you’re better off finding an alternative.
For that lower $250 price point? Maybe. The premium tier offers remote streaming for unlimited users, higher quality video downloads, and fewer headaches when accessing your library from outside the house. It’s not free, but $250 feels justifiable if you use the service daily.
$750 feels predatory.
So look at your options.
Many curators swear by Jellyfin. It’s free, open-source, and requires no lifetime payments. My friends who obsess over media server organization tend to gravitate toward it. Setup isn’t complex. And the cost is basically zero.
Unless you have deep pockets or a nostalgic attachment to the Plex interface, the math doesn’t add up anymore.
The clock is ticking.
Whether you pull the trigger or walk away.
