Google is closing the gap on a massive digital milestone.
The search giant’s AI assistant, Gemini, is poised to join the billion-member club. It’s a club that already holds Search, Gmail, Android, YouTube, and Chrome in its ranks. But right now, Gemini is sitting at 950 million.
That’s a lot of people. And they are adding up fast.
During the Q2 2026 earnings call, Google confirmed that monthly users for Gemini have tripled compared to this time last year. If the math holds up, the company passed the 750 million mark in February. Now it’s pushing hard toward that nine-figure ceiling.
This growth trajectory changes the landscape. It means Gemini is no longer just a sidebar experiment. It’s competing for dominance against OpenAI’s ChatGPT. ChatGPT hit one billion monthly active users back in June. Google is right on its tail.
Why Are Users Switching?
The numbers don’t lie, but the features drive them.
Sundar Pichai, Alphabet’s CEO, pointed directly to “agentic” capabilities as the fuel for this growth. Users are flocking to tools that do work, not just talk.
“Users love new agentic features,” Pichai said. Specifically, he highlighted Daily Brief and Gemini Spark, the personalized agent now available in the U.S. and globally. The pace of shipping these updates is “incredible,” according to leadership.
But it’s not just about chatbots. It’s about integration.
The app has found a robust foothold on iOS, a platform where Google has historically lagged in certain ecosystems. The launch of Nano Banana, an image generation model, seems to be a major draw.
Data from analytics firm Appfigures shows the Gemini app was downloaded over 137 million times in the last 12 months alone. That is significant churn and acquisition combined.
The Shift in Market Share
The battle for the top spot is heating up, and the percentages are shifting.
In its latest “State of AI” report for the first half of 2026, Sensor Tower revealed a historic dip for OpenAI. For the first time ever, ChatGPT’s market share among general AI assistants fell below 50%.
Meanwhile, Gemini’s slice of the pie grew. It captured 27.7% of the market share.
This is a pivotal moment. It suggests that Google’s deep integration across Android, Search, and Workspace is paying off in user acquisition. They aren’t just relying on brand recognition for their search engine anymore. They are leveraging their existing infrastructure to funnel users directly into the Gemini ecosystem.
Is this enough to overtake ChatGPT
