The typewriter is a mechanical beast. It’s a machine that hammers steel type against paper, using an inked ribbon to leave characters behind. You press a key. The type strikes. The paper rolls forward. It was the original text-entry interface.

Christopher L. Sholes patented the first practical version in 1868. Remington started making them commercially in 1874. They didn’t stay niche for long. By the turn of the century, the American office was dominated by these clacking devices.

They evolved. The electric office typewriter arrived in 1920. It was faster. Quieter, maybe. But the real shift happened later. The personal computer and its printer began replacing the typewriter in the 1970s.

Why does this matter now? It defines the baseline for how we think about input. Before the screen, there was the platen. Before the cursor, there was the carriage return. The typewriter established the rhythm of work for a century.

Then it vanished. Replaced by software. By pixels. The hardware didn’t disappear entirely, but its role changed. It became a relic. A specific tool for a specific time.

Now we type into voids. Screens. Clouds. The physical feedback is gone. The “clack” is a memory.
